Group 01 · the festival
When and where is it?
Our plan is Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August 2027 at LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa. The park is National Capital Commission land, the booking window we are working towards is 4–10 August 2027, and a reserve weekend of 21–22 August 2027 sits in the same plan. Permits decide all of it.
Is entry free?
Yes. Free entry for the first edition is a decision, taken and written down.
Food, drink and crafts are paid at the pavilion that sells them. Everything a community's pavilion takes on food, drink and souvenirs stays with that community, and the fee we charge a community for its pavilion is zero.
What should I bring?
A hat, sunscreen, a water bottle and a rain jacket. LeBreton Flats is an open riverside field with no built shelter, so August sun and August rain both reach you.
Bring a card and some cash. Each pavilion sets its own prices and runs its own till.
Can I bring the kids?
Yes, and it costs them nothing, because there is no ticket for anybody.
A children's programme is part of the plan, built for kids growing up between two languages. What it contains is published together with the programme in spring 2027.
Is there alcohol?
No. The first edition runs dry, and that is a decision.
Serving alcohol roughly doubles the toilet requirement — the ANSI/PSAI Z4.4-2025 standard asks 15 units per 1,000 people on site without alcohol and 31 with — adds a sergeant to the police detail and opens four more approval tracks. Year one spends that money on the festival.
Can I bring my dog?
Undecided. The rule comes from the NCC's conditions for the park and from the permit we sign, and neither exists yet. It goes on this page the week the permit is issued.
What happens if it rains?
The festival runs. Losing a whole day to weather is the one case that really hurts a two-day event on an open field, so we are asking for the reserve weekend of 21–22 August 2027 to be written into the agreement with the NCC.

Is the site accessible?
Accessibility is drawn into the site plan from the start, and AODA compliance is also a condition of most of the money we are applying for.
A quiet zone, accessible toilets, an accessible drop-off and step-free routes across the field are in the plan. The Accessibility page carries each item as the venue confirms it.

Our community wants a pavilion. What now?
Write to us now, a year ahead. A community needs that year to gather people, agree inside and plan a kitchen.

What does a pavilion cost a community?
The pavilion fee is zero, and all revenue from your food, drink and souvenirs stays with you.
The community brings the kitchen, the programme, the decor and its own people. We bring the site, the permits, security, insurance, marketing and coordination.
I run a food business. Can I get a pitch?
Vendor applications open in winter 2027.
Rates are not set. When they are, they go on the vendor page before applications open — frontage, power, fee and what a pitch includes — so nobody has to ask. Subscribe and you hear it the day it is published.
Can I volunteer?
Yes. Shifts open in winter 2027, and the roles run from gates and information to kitchens, stages, waste and set-up.
The police record check a festival volunteer needs costs nothing when the organisation asks for it on its own letterhead, so the check costs you nothing.
I perform. How do I get on a stage?
Performer applications open in winter 2027. The programme is built by the communities themselves, and each of the two days carries at least five hours of it.
Fees are unsettled. The performer terms will say plainly what is paid and what is not, and they go up before applications open.

Group 03 · the honest half
Has this festival happened before?
No. 2027 would be the first edition, and nothing on this site describes a past event.
Who is organising it?
A new Ontario not-for-profit corporation, with its office in Ottawa and the majority of its directors living in this region.
The people starting it run a Ukrainian festival in Lanark County, now in its fourth season. Ukrainian Community of Lanark County, that festival's non-profit, is a contractor to the project under a service agreement, and the people who run it are the people starting Capital Cultures. Names, the corporation number and the board go on the About pages as each one exists.
Where does the money come from?
Grants, sponsorship, vendor fees, a 50/50 draw and on-site sales. None of it is confirmed today.
Grant windows through autumn 2026 and winter 2027 settle most of the answer. The funders page will carry what was asked for and what was granted, refusals included.
Is the venue booked?
No. LeBreton Flats Park is NCC land, and the application is still ahead of us.
The City of Ottawa's special event permit itself carries no fee, and the approval track we plan for runs 90 days. The day a permit is signed, this page changes.
What is already decided?
Six things: two consecutive days on one site, community pavilions, free entry, a dry first edition, a zero pavilion fee with all pavilion revenue staying with the community, and a new Ottawa non-profit as the operator.
Everything else is open, and this site says which is which on every page. The size of those two days is settled at the cash gate on 15 February 2027, and a first edition short of confirmed cash runs on one of them — the funders page carries the scenario and the definition of confirmed cash.
How many pavilions, and which communities?
No community is confirmed, and none has been asked. The first conversations start this autumn.
The working budget carries 10 community pavilions. 14 open if confirmed cash clears the threshold at the cash gate on 15 February 2027, the same meeting that decides a second stage and a Friday evening. The pavilions page carries whichever answer stands today.
The roll-call of communities running across this site is a picture of who already cooks in this city. Read it as a promise of who is coming and you have read it wrong.
I already go to GreekFest and the Lebanese Festival. Why this one?
Go to both. They are older than this festival will be for decades, and this one is scheduled to sit in the three weeks of August that no large outdoor festival in this city uses, so it takes nobody's weekend.
What this weekend adds is the walk between kitchens. Ten communities cook on one field, every pavilion serves the same small tasting plate at the same fixed price, and an afternoon covers four continents on foot. The food street is where that is laid out.
Why Ottawa?
130+ diplomatic missions are accredited in Canada, the great majority of them resident here, and no other Canadian city can copy that.
Census 2021 counted 324,960 racialized residents in Ottawa, 32.5% of the city. The audience, the cooks and the partners are already here.
